Genetic editing pattern

The first genome editing technology, the Zinc Finger Nuclease was developed in the 80s. Since then, genetic editing has come a long way. In the past, it might have cost thousands of dollars and weeks or months of fiddling to alter a gene. Now it might cost just £65 and only take a few hours.

Gene editing is performed using enzymes, particularly nucleases that have been engineered to target a specific DNA sequence, where they introduce cuts into the DNA strands, enabling the removal of existing DNA and the insertion of replacement DNA. The modification of the genetic code allows researchers to understand the function of specific genes and their effect in diseases.

To this day, more than 200 different species have been successfully genetically modified. Currently scientists are capable of modifying up to 7 genes simultaneously.
