The influenza virus, commonly known as flu is a respiratory pathogen that circulates in all parts of the world. Its name derives from the Italian word for "influence". In the 18th century, a widely-known superstition suggested that influenza was greatly influenced by planets, stars and the moon.  

In 1933 Richard Shope succeeded to isolate an influenza A virus, unmasking the cause of the yearly flu epidemic. Today we know that influenza is an extremely contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza A, B or C virus. The latter two infect humans only, but type A is known to infect a range of other warm-blooded animals, including pigs, cattle, seals and birds. 

The round influenza virus possesses an envelope that is covered spike-proteins. These act as anchorage aid the virus in the release of its genetic material into human cells. The genetic material of the virus is located in the centre of the structure and is protected by a protein capsule, known as the capsid.
